As a student pilot I wrote to demonstrate the concept of a ‘wind star’ – an aid for light aircraft pilots navigating by ‘dead reckoning’, a basic skill in which all student pilots must become proficient. Dead reckoning allows the pilot to navigate solely by reference to compass headings and elapsed time – a potential life saver if your GPS or other fancy navigation aids decide to fail.
The wind star allows a pilot to quickly estimate any heading corrections required to compensate for the effects of wind, as well as estimate arrival time at the next waypoint.
